You Don’t Need to Do Everything to Do Something
TL/DR:
Feeling helpless in the face of atrocity is common.
The problem feels big because it is big.
Your brain needs specificity to take action.
I built a free tool that gives you small, tailored-to-you steps to help. (No opt in required.)
Try it. Share it. Do your part to be on the right side of history.
The Whole Shebang:
I’ve been feeling really helpless lately.
Powerless. And, at times, hopeless.
I see people kidnapped by masked men, ripped away from their families and then denied due process.
I see the erosion of civil and human rights.
I see children starving in Gaza.
I could go on. And on. But I’ll stop.
Because, despite feeling helpless, I know I’m not.
And you’re not.
No, you can’t single handedly fix everything. But you do have agency. You can do something.
I keep coming back to that Margaret Mead quote:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
I think the problem, for me, and maybe for you, is that it’s hard to know where to start.
And everything feels so big.
And, despite the atrocities being done around us, we still have to live our lives, get through the day, feed our kids, care for our aging parents, or our pets, etc.
And sometimes that’s all we can handle.
With my clients, I’m often talking about how when something feels big, amorphous, unclear or unwieldy, you tend to procrastinate.
Because your brain gravitates to the specific.
And so, one of the key tactics you can use to make progress, is to break down the project, or the task, into small, concrete, next steps.
And this task, of defending democracy, civil rights, and humans rights?
Well, it’s a REALLY big task.
And it feels REALLY complex.
And it can be REALLY hard to know where to start.
So, I built a tool.
For me, and you.
And I’m offering it to you for free. (No opt-in required.)
And my only ask is that you share it with as many people as you can, who want to fight this fight, too.
What is it?
Well, it’s a custom GPT that asks you a few questions about:
What issues you care about
What skills you have to offer
What time you have to give (even if it’s 5 minutes a week!) and
What your relative risk level is (because I know that while John Lewis would want us to all be getting in “good trouble”, you might have a risk tolerance level that isn’t quite that high, but you still want to do something for the cause.)
And then, this tool is going to give you a few crystal clear next steps that you can do to take action to fight for good in the face of evil.
This is your chance to stop doomscrolling, and start doing.
Are you with me?
(Feel free to share this tool widely!)
