Focus and Distractions

Distractions and interruptions don’t just break concentration, they create a hidden tax on the workday. Research shows that many people spend roughly a third of their working time simply trying to refocus after being interrupted. Reclaiming even a portion of that time can significantly change how work feels and how much progress gets made.

In this interactive workshop, participants learn practical, research-backed strategies for protecting attention in distraction-heavy environments. The session explores how attention and distraction actually work, why interruptions are so disruptive, and what individuals can do to regain control of their focus. Participants leave with concrete techniques for reducing distractions from technology, other people, and themselves, as well as strategies for sustaining focus even when ideal conditions aren’t available.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how distractions impact focus, productivity, and the ability to re-engage with work

  • Identify the most common sources of distraction in their own workday

  • Apply techniques to reduce interruptions from technology, other people, and internal distractions

  • Use practical strategies to increase focus and recover attention more quickly when interruptions occur
